APARTAMENTO #3 - 2014, BONFIM - PORTO

The flat was found in its original condition but in need of refurbishment. The challenge was to meet modern comfort and energy efficiency standards without compromising the building's character. The high ceilings, characteristic of these period flats, provided an excellent opportunity to install new infrastructure. This was achieved through the distribution areas, ensuring that the original headroom of the main spaces remained intact. The maid’s room was converted into a new dining room that opens to the kitchen. Aside from this change, the original blueprint was preserved.

// Openspaces are overated //
A generous doorway was created to establish a direct link between the kitchen and dining room, while still maintaining the perception of the two areas as independent. Removing the original partition walls would leave windows awkwardly floating in a space they were not designed for. Additionally, walls are great for leaning furniture.

Solar exposure is the single most important factor in choosing a house. The glazed doors in the center of the apartment allow light to traverse the apartment from both the east and west.

Regardless of your budget, don’t put your money on bathroom fixtures. It’s pointless.
